NACE Calgary’s involvement in the community includes encouraging careers in corrosion-relevant disciplines as well as supporting causes that have an impact locally and sometimes internationally.

ASM/NACE Materials Camp
for Teachers

This camp is a hands-on professional development experience for high school teachers.

NACE Calgary held a one day camp for the 2010 Calgary Teacher's Convention on Friday, February 12, with Andy Nydam presenting material related to Materials Science. The goal of these one-day camps is to foster interest with Calgary area teachers so that we are able to reinstitute weeklong camps again in 2011.

If you would like to participate, volunteer or sponsor a camp, please contact Matt Stroh at 403-669-5490 or membership@nacecalgary.ca.

Background

The purpose of these camps is to get youth interested in materials science and to encourage education and careers in the field. In the previous camps, we have had teachers attend from Alberta, Saskatchewan and New York State. All the teachers that attended came out of the camp with renewed enthusiasm for materials science.

Participants receive a solid overview of materials science, and learn how to perform a comprehensive series of low cost laboratory demonstrations in applied science that they can use in their classrooms for chemistry, science/technology, physics, or industrial arts. To help them see in practice what they learn in the classroom, the participants also take several tours during the week.

The camp instructors are experienced "Master" High School Teachers, university professors and industry experts. These camps would not exist without the financial support of our sponsors, the companies that take the time to give our participants a tour of their facilities, and the group of volunteers that put in countless hours each year to make these camps happen.

Donations to relevant initiatives
From time to time, NACE makes a donation on behalf of its members to a relevant locally based organization that is making a difference locally or internationally.

The Centre for Affordable Water and Sanitation Technology (CAWST) is one of these organizations. CAWST is a Calgary-born charity that provides engineering services in water and sanitation to organizations in developing countries. For more information about CAWST, click here.
